They want to be able to haul heavier loads and are aiming at a lightweight truck, super singles, no passenger seat (in some models) and much less bunk space. More of a mid-roof than flat top. I peeked inside one, but don't remember if it had a top bunk or not. "Not suitiable for teaming or training" is the official line. They are supposed to be paired with the new lighter weight trailers, but are not being reserved for local or regional drivers. They may eventually end up on dedicated accounts as there are certain customers that we are trying to please with this set up. Haven't seen any dedicated drivers with the small trucks yet though.

I'm leasing my truck so I don't have to worry for some time. I hear the company drivers pull keys out of a hat during orientation and have very little say in what kind of truck they get to drive.

I know someone who works at Prime and is very happy over there. Back in the day Prime used to be lease drivers only, but they now have a fleet of company trucks.

The only thing I'm aware of to look out for is the fact that they are beginning to buy flat-top, single-bunk, ultra-lightweight tractors with no passenger seat to save weight and be more competitive with their pricing. I'm not sure if they're eventually going to force all solo drivers to drive these trucks, but somehow I doubt it.

I suspect they plan on using these for local, regional, and dedicated drivers that get home more often while allowing over the road drivers to have the traditional condo trucks, otherwise they will have a very difficult time trying to get drivers to come work for them. Time will tell.
